An asphalt storage tank and bitumen storage tank is an industrial steel storage unit equipped with a heating system and high-performance thermal insulation, designed to maintain bitumen, hot mix asphalt and other viscoelastic materials at a specific operating temperature. It is used to hold the hot mix produced in asphalt plants, maintain continuous bitumen supply and prevent material loss in road construction processes.
HK Makine's bitumen storage and asphalt storage tanks feature ST37 or stainless steel bodies, 100 mm rock wool insulation, hot oil or electric heating coils, thermostatic temperature control and high-capacity discharge systems, delivering long-lasting, efficient and safe operation.
Why is heat loss critical? When bitumen temperature drops below 130°C, its viscosity increases rapidly, impairing pumping and workability. Inadequately insulated tanks increase both energy costs and material waste rates. HK Makine tanks use 100 mm rock wool insulation to minimise heat loss.

The choice of heating system for asphalt and bitumen tanks is determined by energy cost, capacity, usage intensity and installation capabilities. HK Makine produces both systems.
HK Makine asphalt and bitumen tanks come with standard 100 mm rock wool insulation. Rock wool is high-temperature resistant (over 750°C), moisture-resistant and long-lasting. Optimum insulation can reduce energy consumption by up to 40%.
In hot oil systems, steel pipe coils are welded to the base and side surfaces of the tank. The coil layout is designed for homogeneous heat distribution and maximum heat transfer area. All pipe connections are delivered after pressure testing.
Tank temperature is controlled to ±2°C accuracy using an industrial PT100 sensor and digital thermostat combination. A secondary thermostat and alarm system for overheating protection is integrated as standard. Optional PLC integration and remote monitoring are available.
Industrial heated flanged valves are used at the tank outlet. Heating jacket connections are applied to prevent freezing of valves and pipework in cold climates. Helical gear bitumen pumps are optionally available.
Real-time stock monitoring is possible with mechanical or digital level gauges. Automatic fill stop valves and high-level alarm systems can be added on request.
The outer surface of the tank is covered with galvanised sheet or aluminium trapezoidal cladding over the rock wool insulation. All weld seams are inspected to NDT (non-destructive testing) standards before delivery.
