Process Description

What is Biodiesel? How Does Transesterification Work?

Biodiesel is a clean, renewable fuel produced by reacting animal or vegetable fats/oils with a short-chain alcohol (usually methanol) in the presence of a catalyst. It can be used directly in diesel engines or blended with petroleum diesel.

The heart of HK Machine biodiesel plants lies in our advanced Transesterification Reactors. Raw oil, pre-treated to lower its Free Fatty Acid (FFA) level, is heated to 60-65°C inside the reactor. It is mixed intensely with Sodium Methoxide (Methanol + Catalyst) using high-shear homogenizing mixers. As a result of this reaction, triglycerides are split to form the primary product, Biodiesel (Methyl Ester), and the co-product, Crude Glycerin.

High-Efficiency Separation: Following reaction, the mixture is transferred to settling tanks. The heavier crude glycerin settles to the bottom, while pure biodiesel remains in the upper phase. Our system is equipped with custom conical separators that accelerate phase separation and eliminate product loss.

1. Raw Material Pre-treatment

  • Solid particle filtration and sludge removal units.
  • Vacuum dehydration tank to eliminate moisture content.
  • Esterification lines for high-FFA (Free Fatty Acid) oils.

3. Washing & Drying Unit

  • Pure water washing to remove residual soap and catalyst.
  • High-speed centrifugal separators to separate wash water.
  • Final vacuum drying process to achieve EN 14214 compliance.

4. Methanol Recovery System

  • Evaporation system for excess, unreacted methanol.
  • Flash distillation column and condenser with heat exchangers.
  • Re-feeding methanol back into the system to minimize cost.

Which raw materials can be used for biodiesel production?
Industrial and domestic used cooking oils (UCO), animal fats, and vegetable oils such as canola, soybean, sunflower, cottonseed, and palm oils are ideal for production. Even raw oils with high Free Fatty Acid (FFA) rates are processed efficiently through our integrated pre-esterification lines.
Can the produced biodiesel be used directly in engines?
Yes. The output from our plants is premium-quality biodiesel meeting EN 14214 standards. It can be used directly (B100) or blended with petroleum diesel (e.g., B5, B20) in any conventional diesel engine, generator, agricultural vehicle, or industrial burner without modification.
What permits or licenses are needed for installation?
Depending on your jurisdiction, biodiesel production requires environmental impact declarations and fuel production licenses. HK Machine provides comprehensive technical blueprints, P&ID diagrams, and layout engineering support to facilitate your regulatory approval processes.
What is crude glycerin used for?
Approximately 10-11% of the raw material input is converted to crude glycerin. Being heavier, it settles at the bottom of our reactor and is separated automatically. This byproduct is highly sought after by the cosmetics, soap, pharmaceutical, antifreeze, and livestock feed industries, creating an additional stream of revenue.
