Why is stainless steel more expensive? Stainless steel requires high nickel and chromium content, specialist welding and GMP/FDA-compliant surface finishing, making initial investment higher than carbon steel. However, with a 20–30 year service life, the total cost of ownership is significantly lower.

AISI 304 (1.4301): 18% Cr – 8% Ni, used for general-purpose food, beverage and pharmaceutical applications. Excellent resistance to water and mild acids.
AISI 316L (1.4404): 16% Cr – 10% Ni – 2% Mo content provides far superior resistance to chlorides, sulphuric acid and seawater compared to AISI 304. Preferred for chemical, marine and pharmaceutical GMP production.
Food and pharmaceutical applications require Ra ≤ 0.8 µm (GMP) or Ra ≤ 0.4 µm (FDA/USP) surface roughness. HK Makine tanks offer 4 different surface finishing qualities including electropolish. All weld seams are mechanically and chemically passivated.
All tanks are produced using the TIG (GTAW) welding method under argon shielding. Welded joints pass 100% visual inspection, leak testing and — where required — X-ray (RT) or ultrasonic (UT) NDT. PED 2014/68/EU directive applies to all pressure vessels.
Optionally, a dimple jacket or coil jacket heating/cooling system is integrated onto the outer body of the tank. Compatible with steam, hot water or glycol circuits. All jacket systems are subjected to sealing and pressure tests.
Clean In Place (CIP) and Sterilise In Place (SIP) connections are offered as standard for the food and pharmaceutical sectors. Fixed rotating and static spray ball nozzles are available.
Level (ultrasonic, radar or float), temperature (PT100/PT1000), pressure, density and pH sensors integrate with PLC and SCADA systems. HMI touchscreen panels and remote monitoring systems can be installed on request.
