A thermal oil heater (hot oil boiler) uses heat transfer oil to safely and uniformly heat industrial process equipment, reactors, presses, dryers or pipelines. Unlike steam, thermal oil systems reach 300-350°C at very low pressure, eliminating the safety risks of steam boilers.
HK Makine thermal oil heaters are delivered as fully integrated systems with a high-strength steel boiler shell, multi-pass tube bundle, atmospheric expansion tank, circulation pump, control panel and safety fittings.
Thermal oil vs. steam? Reaching 300°C with a steam boiler requires 86 bar pressure. A thermal oil heater achieves the same temperature at just 1-3 bar — meaning higher safety, fewer incidents, longer equipment life and lower insurance costs.
HK Makine thermal oil heaters are produced in different models and configurations according to facility space, capacity requirements and fuel type.
The boiler shell is manufactured from P265GH or P355GH quality pressure vessel steel. The inner tube bundle is made from cold-drawn seamless steel tubes (ST37.4 or ST52); all welds are full-penetration TIG or electric welds. Heat treatment is applied between the outer shell and tube bundle.
Depending on capacity and fuel type, a modulating or 2-stage burner from Riello, Weishaupt, Baltur or equivalent brands is selected. Configurations for natural gas, LPG, diesel, fuel oil and dual-fuel (bi-fuel) are available. Fuel filtration, metering and safety valves are supplied with the burner selection.
The thermal oil expansion tank is sized according to whether the system is designed as open-to-atmosphere or closed (nitrogen blanket). The expansion tank — integrating safety valves, level indicators and a cooling coil — is one of the most critical safety elements of the system.
The thermal oil circulation pump is a centrifugal pump with a mechanical seal rated for high temperature (300-350°C). Flow rate and pressure head are calculated and selected according to boiler capacity. Pipework is fabricated from S235JR or S355JR steel pipes; heat-resistant gaskets are used on all flanges.
The standard control panel includes a PID temperature controller, flow meter, air-gas ratio regulator, dial thermometers and safety thermostats. Optionally, PLC + touchscreen panel (HMI) and SCADA integration can be added. Remote alarm and monitoring can be provided via GSM modem.
During system design, the appropriate thermal oil is selected based on the facility's maximum operating temperature and oil-change interval. Widely used brands such as Therminol, Marlotherm, Dowtherm or Globeterm are compatible with our systems. HK Makine provides technical support for the initial oil fill.
